Ear wax removal can be performed on anyone who complies to the procedure and is over the age of 5.
However, certain factors like the ones listed below may determine which type of removal can be performed.
- If you have had any serious problems with water irrigation or micro-suction previously
- If you have had an ear infection in the last 6 weeks
- If you have had ear surgery in the last 2 years
- If you are under the current care of an ear, nose or throat doctor
- If you have had a perforated ear drum or ear discharge in the last 12 months (I can only perform micro-suction)
- If you have had a cleft palate repair or have a current cleft palate (I can only perform micro-suction)
I will examine your ears during your appointment, looking for signs of infection and for the severity of wax build up. I then may perform tests of hearing and balance to determine whether the problem is or isn’t ear wax impaction. As a fully qualified and advanced clinical practitioner, I have the additional skills and experience involved to assess your ears to check for any balance or tinnitus issues you may be facing in a similar way to your GP.
I’ll then discuss with you the most appropriate method of wax removal to suit your needs and then begin the ear wax removal procedure. Ear wax removal is often made easier if olive oil is used to soften the wax in the days leading up to your appointment. Please avoid using products containing sodium bicarbonate or hydrogen peroxide as these can often cause irritation to the ear canal rather than soften the wax. I recommend using Earol spray which can be purchased online in retailers such as Boots. Alternatively, simple olive oil can also be used.
