Which ear wax removal is best?

From a safety point of view micro-suction is best however everyone is different and i may recommend another method once i’ve looked in your ears. There are two main methods used to remove ear wax- micro suction and water irrigation.

The method used to remove wax is entirely dependent on different ear conditions as well as individual preferences.

Previously, ear syringing was carried out using a large hand-held metal syringe that injected warm water at a high pressure into the ear to remove the wax. This method would cause several complications after use so was phased out years ago. Nowadays, this method has been adapted to allow for a gentle flow of water to enter the ear to dislodge built-up wax. However, it is not always suitable for all patients and can still pose risks which is why I will go on to talk about micro suction as the safest method of ear wax removal.

Micro suction is considered the gold standard of ear wax removal given that the procedure is done under direct vision. It involves an instrument which effectively hoovers the wax and dead skin cells from the ear canal in a precise manner.

This technique is therefore suitable to most patients, even those with previous ear issues or sensitivity given that it is quick and avoids contact with the ear drum.
